Here is my identification card sketch for European Rocket (Cakile maritima), a European species, as the common name suggests. This plant has a rather interesting history on the California coast, which I won’t go into here, but I can tell you all about it if you really want to know. Even though it’s non-native, it has naturalized and seems to play nicely with the native species. I think it’s a nice addition (as far as non-natives go) with its unique leaves and little purple, pink, or white flowers.

I lead two lives - one as an artist and the other as a scientist. More and more I'm finding my two worlds colliding, and it's not the disaster you might expect. View all posts by micheletobias
